Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake.  It's situated at the junction of the Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto-Adigio regions, near the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains (part of the Alps system).  Lake Garda has a surface area of almost 370 square km (just over 140 square mi.) and it's over 50 km (32 mi.) long.  The lake has been the scene of many important events in Italian history, including a naval battle between Italian and Austrian forces during the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866.
