We love houseboating on Shasta Lake in California. This year we were treated to warm water and near perfect weather. The lake level was down about 80 feet while we were there. We also wanted to see the Perseids Meteor Shower with a clear night sky. The Perseids is one of the brightest meteor showers of the year. They occur every year between July 17 and August 24 and tend to peak around August 9-13. All of this made for a fun and relaxing getaway. Due to COVID-19 this houseboating vacation was one of the safest we could find. The houseboat is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between guests. There is minimal interaction with anyone outside of our family group. Out on the lake everyone stays far apart. All transactions are electronic and we only interreact with one person during check-in and checkout. We were outdoors almost all of the time including sleeping on the roof of the houseboat. We used Holiday Harbor and were very satisfied with our houseboat rental. Shasta Lake, is the largest man-made reservoir in California. When it is full the 365 mile shoreline exceeds that of the San Francisco Bay. The dam was constructed between 1935 and 1945. Three major rivers feed Lake Shasta, the Pit, McCloud, and Sacramento. The ragged shoreline, and sheer size of Shasta Lake tends to break the lake into different areas, each with its own characteristics. Our favorite is the Pit River Arm.
