In “Fonte Vetica” in October the 13th 1919, one of the saddest tragedies of the Gran Sasso took place, when a sudden and unexpected early winter storm, caused the death of 5,000 sheep, their shepherd, Pupo Nunzio from Roio, and two of his young children. His wife seeking them, went mad with grief . Even today there is a monument and a memorial stone commemorating this shocking episode.
