This may be the last look we get at these historical sites before the rain begins to refill the lake. Hopefully we will not see this again for a long time. I am wishing for a wet winter and a full lake next year. Update - after a significant storm 10/22-24 the lake level is rising, so we may not see this view for long. This video starts at train tunnel #5 with the Sacramento river flowing under the trestle. The next spot is one of my favorites along the Pit River Arm with the trees. The finish is at Sugarloaf boat ramp and exposed Highway 99 Pollock Bridge at Salt Creek. While visiting Lake Shasta we discovered this old Sothern Pacific train tunnel and trestle rising out of the water. Due to the California drought several old structures are now exposed. We swam though it in August just to say we did it. Four of us took lifejackets and flashlights to go exploring. We swam the length and back because we did not have a ride back. Because the tunnel is curved it was very dark and the only way to see any detail required flashlights. This train trestle and tunnel #5 are near the Beehive Camping area off Lakeshore Drive. I was told that this trestle is actually a cantilever truss. I checked some references and it looks to be correct. I also checked some pictures of other cantilever truss bridges, they looked similar. Shasta Lake is the largest man-made reservoir in California. When it is full the 365-mile shoreline exceeds that of the San Francisco Bay. The dam was constructed between 1935 and 1945. Three major rivers feed Lake Shasta, the Pit, McCloud, and Sacramento. The ragged shoreline, and sheer size of Shasta Lake tends to break the lake into different areas, each with its own characteristics. We enjoy the Pit River Arm because they did not log the trees before lake filled. One of my favorites is the Pit River Arm with the trees. We also discovered the old Highway 99 Pollock Bridge rising out of the water. The bridge is in good condition considering that it has been under water for a while. I was also able to record some of the original Highway 99 roadbed.
