Story telling and activism using the Mavic 3 cine. Telling stories and documentation through drone photography can make a difference. Here is one story associated with this winters series of storms in southern California. I'm looking for input on how to improve the story telling. Thanks The consequences of the atmospheric rivers in southern California are indeed noteworthy, often devastating and costly. IIn beach side communities large waves and heavy rains result in beach erosion and hillside collapse. As a geologist I've often looked at homes perched on hillsides and thought about the inevitable consequences of hillside collapse. It's no mystery as to how the bluffs formed. The bluffs are undercut by waves, they are saturated with rain water and the inevitable happens, parts of the hillside collapses. So what does the future hold for homeowners along the bluffs in areas such as this one in San Clemente? As a result of warmer temperatures associated with climate change we will see two things: More intense storms (as we have seen this winter with the series of atmospheric rivers) and sea level rise. The consequences will be more homes lost to landslides, or in other coastal areas, flooding. We have already seen rail lines along the southern California Coast, such as the ones shown here, taken out by landslides. And the rail companies (Amtrak and MetroRail) are talking about moving the tracks. Communities are talking about what to do with whole neighborhoods. Do you shore up bluffs, do you create berms to protect homes from waves and flooding or do you move? There are no easy answers.
