Laguna del Maule was initially a natural lagoon located on an area covered by lava from the Laguna del Maule volcano that was later dammed to regulate and ensure the supply of irrigation in the Maule River basin. It is located 150 km southeast of the city of Talca, in the high Andes mountain range and only 7 km from the border with Argentina.
