The Moab region is spectacular...what else can you call it. The rock formations, the river, the sky all come together to make this an area that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Nearly 200 million years ago the area was cover by ancient river and streams. About 170 million years ago the area looked like the deserts of Saudi Arabia with huge sand dunes covering much of what is now the western US. These resulted in the "fossilized sand dunes) that we see today. Roughly 10 million years ago geologic forces pushed the area up...causing the Colorado River and its tributaries to cut down through the rocks, creating the spectacular scenery we enjoy today.
