Bagamoyo is the charming nearly forgotten original capital of German East Africa. Abreast to the sea, it boasts a lively fish market -- though catches are small. The road Firefly Lodge is located on is lined with old, plaster-walled buildings. About as many of them are being used as have crumbled beyond salvaging, leaving only their skeletal remains: a handful of walls and empty windows revealing the ocean or the sky as the roofs themselves have long since fallen in. The mostly forgotten town boasts a fish market not far from where the slave port once was. Some attribute the name Bagamoyo – Bwaga-Moyo, which means "Lay down your Heart" in Swahili – to the idea of the slaves giving up all hope when they were put on ships. However, the port was never a major slave port, which leads many experts to believe that the name was in reference to porters resting in the city run by relatives of Shamvi la Magimba in Oman after having carried 35lbs of cargo on their shoulders from the Great Lakes region. In this case, it would be more like telling them to relax and rest. Music by Kai Engel
