Viktring is located in the south of Klagenfurt. Viktring was mentioned for the first time in 977 as Vitrino (Celtic Knittelfeld) and gained great importance by the founding of the Cistercian monastery by Count Bernhard von Marburg in 1142.
The Viktring Abbey became one of the largest and richest in Carinthia and until the time of its abolition in 1786 it was the religious and cultural center of the region. Today, there is a music gymnasium.
The monastery was acquired in 1970 by the Republic of Austria and in 1977 a "Realgymnasium with creative focus" (Musikgymnasium, see BRG Viktring) was established.
