Mont Sainte-Odile (Odilieberri in Alsatian, Odilienberg in German) is a Vosges mountain located in Ottrott in the Bas-Rhin department, culminating at an altitude of 764 meters. It is crowned by Hohenbourg Abbey, a convent overlooking the Alsace plain, founded by Saint Odile, patron saint of Alsace, daughter of Duke Etichon. A center of Alsatian culture, this convent is a popular pilgrimage site (1,300,000 visitors per year). On a clear day, the view extends as far as the Black Forest and the Bernese Alps. The remains of an ancient wall, the "pagan wall," can also be found there. TRAGIC ACCIDENT: On January 20, 1992, at 7:20 p.m., an Airbus A320 operating Air Inter Flight 148 from Lyon to Strasbourg crashed into Bloss Mountain, near Mont Sainte-Odile, killing 87 people and leaving nine survivors. A memorial clearing, accessible on foot, has been created on part of the area cleared during the crash.
