Nijmegen is located on the south bank of the Waal River, in the eastern province of Gelderland. Located just a few km/mi west of the German border, Nijmegen has been settled for over 2,000 years. It was granted its city charter in 1230 by the then-Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II. It was the first city to fall into German hands during the Nazi invasion of the Low Countries in 1940.

In 1995 the city of Nijmegen (The Netherlands) and surrounding villages had to deal with flooding. Parts of the city was flooded and people were evacuated from their homes. Since then, the city of Nijmegen decided that they never wanted to deal with this kind of threat from the river Waal anymore. So they decided to plan one of the biggest water projects in The Netherlands: Room for the River Waal. A side river was dug next to the River Waal which must prevent the city of Nijmegen from flooding again. Now, in February 2021, the water levels are extremely high and we can see the results of the side river showing off. And on top of that, it has become a major nature park where people can relax and enjoy the great views. This video shows Nijmegen, city along the river!
