Saint-Elzéar was founded in 1924 in the wake of the colonization works of Francois-Xavier Ross, the first bishop of the diocese of Gaspé. The year before the foundation of the village, in June 1923, all the territory of the future "colony" was the prey of the flames, which facilitated, to a certain extent, the clearing of land and the construction of the access road. Since the very beginning, the forestry vocation of the municipality is well established. A first sawmill was built during the winter of 1924 and the village will sometimes have up to five in operation. May 30, 1944 marks a turning point in the economic and social life of Saint-Elzéar. At the instigation of the pastor of the time, Mr. Donat Paradis, the "Syndicat forestier", a cooperative group of workers, was born. Today, the Cooperative Forest Association of Saint-Elzéar has about 150 workers, half of whom come from outside the village. It has a turnover of nearly $ 6,000,000, compared to $ 8,000 in 1944. In December 1975, the discovery of the Saint-Elzéar cave will enrich the region and Québec with a unique natural site which, in 1990, will be open to the general public. In addition to the tourism sector, the establishment of a commercial blueberry field in early 1990 will consolidate a diversification of the municipality's economy.
