On the Uruguayan Atlantic coast and at the limit between the departments of Rocha and Maldonado is the Laguna de Garzon, which forms part of the Habitat and / or Species Management Area, a protected area in Uruguay. The area, of great wealth due to its biological diversity, covers 9596 hectares of land surface and 27332 hectares of marine surface. The water mirror, which forms the Laguna Garzon, represents 1750 hectares. Like Laguna de Rocha, it communicates with the Atlantic Ocean through a sand bar that opens periodically, naturally or artificially through human action. This process favors biological productivity, as it is the breeding ground for an important number of species of resident and migratory birds, fish, molluscs and crustaceans. This gives the lagoon area great economic, ecological and landscape value.
