Over the Eifel

The Eifel region is an attractive area of highlands between Aachen, Cologne, Koblenz and Trier which is quite untypical of the rest of Germany’s landscapes. Visitors don’t normally think of this nation as volcanic territory, but dormant volcanoes have formed a lot of the higher ground. You see : the ruine of Blankenheim, Ruhrsee and Einruhr village, the castles of Manderscheid ,Ordensburg Vogelsang*is a former Nazi estate and abandoned village of Wollseifen** *Ordensburg Vogelsang is a former Nazi estate placed at the former military training area in Eifel National Park in North Rhine-Westphalia. The landmarked and completely preserved estate was used by the National Socialists between 1936 and 1939 as an educational centre for future leaders. Since 1 January 2006 the area has been open to visitors. It is one of the largest architectural relics of National Socialism. The gross area of the landmarked buildings is 50,000 m² **Wollseifen was located close to the NSDAP training centre at Vogelsang. After the war, the British Army took over the area as a training ground, and the inhabitants were forcibly removed. A copy of the "Accommodation Demand" or "Besetzungsbefehl" (the German word is perhaps more accurate…), is visible on the Information board. Only 3 of the original buildings remain, including the church and the school, although numerous foundation blocks can still be found: The School also houses an exhibition, including photos of training exercises in the area. The other buildings are military constructions for training purposes.
