Its coastal areas are quite populous - it's the fifth largest state by population. The interior of the state is a land of rivers that drain its extensive mountainous and plateau areas into the Atlantic Ocean. In Passo do S, located 38km from Cambará do Sul- Brazil, it is possible to be dazzled by a beautiful landscape where tropeiros used to cross the River Tainhas.
At this point, the river ceases to be deep and runs on a 80-meter wide slab where it is possible to cross it, on foot, by car or on horseback.
Further on the flagstone becomes a waterfall 100m high, also of indescribable beauty.
As nature was once more capricious in Aparados da Serra, this curiously slab is shaped like a perfect S, giving rise to its name: Passo do "S".
