Sand Harbor is the along the eastern side of Lake Tahoe. The crystal blue water, pine covered mountains rising from the lake...and the large granite boulders that line the shore line and emerge from the blue waters make this one of the most scenic spots along what is already one of the most stunning spots in the US. The eastern shore (the Nevada side of the lake) was mecca for lumber barrens. In the late 1800's Sand Harbor was a loading site for lumber harvested from the nearby mountain sides. The eastern part of the lake remained in private hands through much of the 1900's with one of the largest land owners being an excentric San Franciscan, George Whittell, who owned 27 miles of shoreline and build the magnificent Thunderbird Lodge just south of Sand Harbor. Through a variety of deals the State of Nevada and the US Forest Service acquired much of this property. As a result, today the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe remains much as it has for much of history...a pristine lake front along the largest Alpine lake in the US. Today Sand Harbor is a popular spot for kayakers, SUP's, swimming and boating and a launching spot for exploring the east side of Lake Tahoe. It's also home to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare festival. All in all...an amazing place.
