Sanibel is the largest of the islands which lie off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida. Connected to the mainland by the Sanibel Causeway since 1963, Sanibel is one of the most ecologically protected sites in Florida. With strict limits on development, roughly half of the island's land area is covered by wildlife refuges.
