There is a very high hill called the Puig de Missa overlooking the town of Santa Eularia des Riu and this hill has the fortified Santa Eularia Church on top, with good views of the city. The church has a semi-circular tower that used brown stone. The church dates from the 16th century and has a very impressive Baroque altarpiece that is gilded and has the figure of Santa Eularia (Eulalia in Castilian and Eulària in Catalan) . This altar came from San Millan in Segovia and was carved by Jose Ferreres between 1674 and 1678. There is a figure of Santa Eularia that was carved by Carlos Ramon and Vicente Salvador from Valencia. Santa Eularia is the patron saint of the town. Several chapels were added in the 17th and 18th centuries. The interior of the church is sober. One of the most important sculptures is that of a Christ tied to a column, dated to the 17th century. The front of the church has an impressive arcade with three rows of semicircular arches. On top of the church there are two dark colored domes. At the back of the church is a cemetery. The reason the church was fortified is that there were many pirates who attacked towns in Ibiza between the 14th and 18th centuries. Residents of the town went to the church to save themselves from the pirates. The fortified church became impregnable and within the fortified space there was a water cistern also. The church has always been a meeting place for young people who tried to find potential mates here.
