Mega Spilaio Monastery
Perched dramatically on a sheer cliff of Mount Chelmos, the 1,664-year-old Monastery of Mega Spilaio was founded in 362 AD, making it one of the oldest monasteries in Greece. Built into the living rock, it has stood as a silent guardian over the Peloponnese for more than sixteen centuries. Throughout its long history, it was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times by fires, invasions, and war—including its burning by German forces in 1943 during World War II. Yet each time, it rose again, stronger and enduring. Today, it remains an active monastery and a powerful symbol of resilience, faith, and timeless presence above the valley below.
