We decided to take things down-river this week. 🌉 #BKLYN In this episode, soar with us over #DUMBO; historically/visually characterized by old industrial and warehouse buildings, Belgian block streets, and its location on the East River spanning from the #BrooklynBridge, to the #ManhattanBridge, to #VinegarHill. Some unique info to know: + The first and largest battle of the Revolutionary War, The Battle of Brooklyn, was fought in DUMBO. + The first residents of DUMBO were most likely a local #Brooklyn Native American tribe known as the Marechkawick. + The Fulton Ferry has been operational since 1642, used by both Native American and Dutch colonial residents, and still used today for DUMBO commuters. + The first Black school in Brooklyn was opened in DUMBO. + The Cardboard Box was invented in DUMBO by Robert Gair. Thus, the old name for the neighborhood, Gairville. It's transition from forgotten-land to artist territory began back in the 1970's. Transplants moved into the empty floors of industrial warehouse buildings, (sometimes illegally) to live and work. Escaping the rising gentrification in Manhattan, artists and activists made their way to Brooklyn in search for a new start. Eventually in 1981, all of DUMBO was bought and reconstructed into an upscale residential and commercial neighborhood—originally as a haven for artists, and currently a hub for tech startups. Pier 1 of Brooklyn Bridge Park opened in 2010, and has since expanded along the East River waterfront to include amenities for visitors like climbing walls 🧗♂️, gardens 🌷, dog runs 🐕, sports facilities 🏢, restaurants 🍝 and, Jane's Carousel 🎠 New Yorkers know DUMBO as the cobblestone-filled, tourist-attracting, real-estate-developing, date-night-having, place to take your family and friends for an impressive experience of one of the most revived neighborhoods in Brooklyn. We hope you enjoy these aerial views of DUMBO; a different perspective than most get to see. **Streets By Air is a AEROCINE Films Production. All footage is owned by AEROCINE Films LLC.
