Jan Mayen is located hundreds of miles off of the Norwegian mainland, at the northwestern boundary of the Norwegian Sea (an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean). Considerably closer to Greenland than mainland Norway, Jan Mayen covers about 146 square mi. (around 377 square km) and has no permanent population.
