The Apuan Alps are located in the Tuscany Region, in an area that affects the provinces of Massa-Carrara and Lucca and the sub-regions of Lunigiana, Garfagnana and Versilia. In this area the extraction of marble has very ancient roots. Especially as regards the areas of Carrara, this activity has been the main economic engine since Roman times. So much so that the marbles of this territory - now famous all over the world - have been used for many centuries for artistic and building uses, strongly influencing the regulatory environment and the cultural and traditional models of these places. Proof of this is the fact of how widespread the myth of the quarryman is in these areas, also given the danger of the work carried out.
At the end of the 19th century, the mining activity became even more intense in these areas of Tuscany, involving more and more areas for the "cultivation" of the so-called agri marble and saw an exponential increase in the quantity of marble extracted, also thanks to the continuous evolution of mining technology. As a result of all this, companies have multiplied - both local and foreign - interested in entering this thriving economy and its diversified activities.
But it is only starting from the 90s of the twentieth century that this territory becomes particularly attractive for the giants of the sector and for multinationals, given that there is an ever greater interest in the various types of industrial use to which calcium carbonate lends itself. , present in the debris produced by the excavation.
From an environmental point of view, the increase in extraction activity and the use of new processing techniques have had a devastating impact on the Apuan territory. Leading to the destruction of the landscape and entire mountain ridges; hydrogeological instability with the increase in floods and, above all, water pollution - both superficial due to the presence of "marmettola" (dust derived from cutting marble), and aquifer due to the presence of hydrocarbons used for the machinery that, in a geologically karst area, jeopardizes the water supply for a large part of the population-
Also for these reasons, in 1985 the “Regional Natural Park of the Apuan Alps” was established, whose internal and neighboring quarries have always been the subject of political dispute regarding their opening and the possibility of use.
