The empty spaces you see on Edinburgh's North Bridge are architectural features designed to balance the structure, not empty pedestals waiting for missing statues. The single stone sculpture group on the bridge is the King's Own Scottish Borderers War Memorial, which was independently added years after the bridge was finished. The Illusion of "Empty Plinths"When the current bridge was built by Sir William Arrol between 1894 and 1897, the city architect designed symmetric masonry piers and pylon-style corners to anchor the bridge aesthetically. These pedestals were intended as architectural flourishes to break up the heavy ironwork, rather than a planned four-statue grand scheme. Building ornamental niches or plinths without intending to fill them was a common practice in Victorian and Georgian architecture.
