[Beautiful Iceland Series Part Seven]
Vík í Mýrdal in 2011 had a population of almost 300 people. Despite its relativity small size, it is the largest settlement for some 43 miles (70km). It is an important staging post for Route 1, thus it is indicated on road signs from a far away around the south of the Island. Beyond passing the Village Fuel and services are rare and it is very important when going past Vík í Mýrdal to take full advantage of filling up on a full tank of fuel before going any further. The Village is very much build around this service station, with the station being on Route 1 and almost directly in the middle.
Vik is home to some of the most beautiful scenery, as shown in the beautiful drone footage, what if i do say so myself captures that beauty. In 1991, the US Journal Islands Magazine counted this beach as one of the ten most beautiful beaches on Earth. The beach stretch of black basalt sand is one of the wettest places in Iceland. The cliffs west of the beach are home to many seabirds, mostly consisting of puffins which burrow into the shallow soils during the nesting season. Offshore lie stacks of basalt rock, remnants of a once more extensive cliffline, Reynisfjall, now battered by the sea currents and waves.
There are no landmass between here and the Antarctica and the Atlantic rollers can attack with full force with no disruptions creating strong currents and waves. According to folklore, they are former trolls who tried to drag their boats out to sea only to be caught by the rising dawn. The sea around them is rather wild and stormy, so travelers will not be surprised to discover a monument to the memory of drowned seamen on the beach.
Other legends tell the story of a husband who found his wife taken by the two trolls, frozen at night. The husband made the two trolls swear to never kill anyone ever again. His wife was the love of his life, whose free spirit he was unable to provide a home for; she found her fate out among the trolls, rocks, and sea at Reynisfjara.
The village did succumb to the volcanic activity in 2010 by volcanic ash during the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull.
