Val Dogna (Cjanâl di Dogne in Friuli) is a valley in the Julian Alps, in Italian territory (Friuli Venezia Giulia). It is located in the municipality of Dogna (UD), is about 15 km long and has a west-east direction, and is crossed by the stream of the same name from the east. To the north it is bordered by the forested Jôf di Dogna-Due Pizzi coastline, and to the south by the rugged walls of the Monte Cimone-Jôf di Montasio chain. A very panoramic military road runs along the north side, connecting the few and now almost completely uninhabited scattered hamlets with other connecting roads: Chiout Pupin (706 m), Chiout di Goliz (591 m), La poate (500 m ), Roncheschin (465 m), Chiout di Puppe (470 m), Chiout di Gus (715 m), Chiout Tasot (922 m), Chiout Zucuin (808 m), Chiout (838 m), Blaudineit (698 m), Costasacchetti (895 m), Pleziche (820 m), Mincigos (965 m). The morphology of this valley did not allow the survival of a minimal agricultural activity after 1970, being the plots too steep and not suitable for mechanization. The 1976 earthquake contributed heavily to the abandonment of the settlements by the last families who remained there; Chiout di Gus had been evacuated due to landslides as early as 1972, while Mincigos, Chiout Tasot, Blaudineit and Poate had already been abandoned previously.
