The accidental detonation of a huge store of fertilizer ingredient ammonium nitrate killed approximately 200 people, injured several thousand, and caused an estimated US $10-15 billion in property damage in this Mediterranean port city. The second explosion was extremely powerful, and caused at least 171 deaths, 6,000 injuries, US$10–15 billion in property damage, and left an estimated 300,000 people homeless
