WELCOME TO METEORA! Meteora (in Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [mɛtɛoɾɐ], literally "in the middle of the air", from the Greek μετά (metá) "in the middle of" and ἀείρω (aeírō) air, "suspended in the air" or "high in the skies")[1] is a famous location located in northern Greece, on the north-western edge of the Thessaly plain, near the town of Kalambaka. It is an important center of the Orthodox Church, second only to Mount Athos, as well as a renowned tourist destination, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.[2][3] Of the twenty-four monasteries built with enormous sacrifices on top of spectacular sandstone cliffs, only six are currently still inhabited, partly recovered after years of abandonment.
