I saw a design somewhat similar to this on Quadmovr's channel, and I like the look so I spent a lunch break at work and mocked this up. I made a good number of changes to suite my application. I added a top plate with a GoPro mount up front, top mount "toilet-tank" battery, improved the inner arm mounting joints, added press nuts directly to the inner arm with 3 bolts instead of two, etc. I cut it on my CNC the next evening and had it in my hand within 36 hours :D Rapid prototyping is awesome! I just finished the build and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I only had 4mm carbon on hand, and the inner arms really need to be at least 5mm, probably 6mm due to the torsional stresses caused by the outer "T" arms. Trying to decide whether it's worth actually producing, as I'm not sure there is any demand for a 5" hex frame. It was a fun diversion though! The maiden went surprisingly well given how different this frame is from normal. First pack was pretty rough, but I dialed in some tuning and this was the result. Took more P gains than I anticipated, and it still feels a bit heavy in the air. It weighs in at 840ish grams with these original batch 2206.5 2300kv Rebel motors. It tracks on rails though, and it is surprisingly agile. The tune still needs a tiny bit of work, I think I could go up in P gains even a bit more. Mostly though I need to get used to the differences in how it handles. It's hard to describe, as it's more agile in some ways, but less in others. It hugs the ground super nicely and proximity is a blast, but it doesn't have a lot of top end. Loads of recovery power though. The roll and pitch rates have some oddities that I'm not used to as well. Max roll rates are about the same, but it seems to get there a lot quicker, so I was overshooting a bit the first pack. I dialed back my pitch rates a good bit and that helped. It still catches me by surprise periodically though. Overall I call this a success, and I can't wait to play with it more. Not much interesting here flying-wise, just feeling things out, but this gives you an idea of the shape of things.
