Manheim-Alt, originally part of the town of Kerpen, has been largely abandoned due to the expansion of the Hambach surface mine operated by RWE Power. Most of the village’s residents were relocated to Manheim-neu, a newly constructed settlement.

The area has a rich history, with roots going back to medieval times, but the village became increasingly deserted as the lignite mining project expanded. Today, many of the buildings in Manheim-Alt are demolished or in ruins, and the village is mostly uninhabited, serving as a symbol of the conflict between economic interests and local heritage.
