Lake Maggiore is one of the largest lakes in the Alps region. It forms part of the border between Italy and Switzerland and between the two Italian regions of Lombardy and Piedmont. The lake is overlooked by some of the highest mountains of the range, including Mt. Rosa, Italy's tallest. Famously, Lake Maggiore was featured in Ernest Hemingway's immortal World War I work, A Farewell to Arms (first published in 1929). In the book, the two main characters use the lake to escape to the safety of neutral Switzerland.
