Part of the central province of Quảng Nam, Hội An became one of the most important trading ports on the South China Sea from the 16th-18th centuries. It's located on the estuary of the Thu Bồn River, less than 20 mi. (around 30 km) south of Da Nang, the principal city of the central part of Vietnam. Since 1999, it's been a UNESCO World Heritage site.
