MANGYSTAU – Flying Over an Ancient Ocean Millions of years ago, this extraordinary landscape lay beneath an ancient ocean. Today, the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan feels like another planet — a vast world of towering limestone formations, endless deserts, deep canyons and surreal landscapes shaped by time. We traveled through this remote corner of Central Asia with our drones, searching for perspectives that reveal the true scale and beauty of Mangystau. From the air, the traces of its prehistoric past become visible: ancient seabeds, dramatic cliffs and strange formations stretching toward the horizon.
