A small island in the northeast of Mainland, well worth the trip (take the ferry, rent a bike at the Trumland Farm and explore prehistory and natural beauty).
But first we visit two prehistoric sites on Mainland: Barnhouse Neolithic Village, discovered as late as 1984 but 5,000 years old, is best seen from the air, and Unstan Chambered Cairn which is even older and can be entered.
Then it's off to Rousay. Our first stop there is Traverse Tuick, a rare example of a two story chambered cairn - though the two stories weren't connected originally. It was built around 3,000 BC.
Just a kilometer further is Blackhammer Chambered Cairn, which is even older (3.300 BC), but more conventional. It has a modern roof which makes it more comfortable to stand and lets in light.
Another kilometer on is Knowe of Yarso of the same time period which has a commanding view (unfortunately my GoPro was malfunctioning there).
Next is the double site of Midhowe, a huge (and modernly protected by a barn like structure) chambered cairn from around 3,500 BC and a broch from around 0.
When Eric at Trumland Farm Bike Rentals saw my drones he gave us the invaluable tip to walk further from Midhowe to the sea to get to those incredible cliffs. Should have flown through them but was too inflexible, afraid or dumb to get a good line - next time.
We finish off at some unexplained and probably modern stones on our trip around the island.
