Stilo: A Jewel Among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy .
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Take an aerial tour of an iconic village in southern Italy, compliments of former Drone Video of the Week Winner Galax. The subject of the video is Stilo, which is located on the southern side (bottom) of the "foot" of Italy in the province of Reggio Calabria. Situated at the foot of Mount Consolino, the town is just a few mi./km from the coast, as you'll see just before the 1:00 mark. At around 1:30, you'll see one of the town's most well-known landmarks: the Byzantine church Cattolica di Stilo.

Situated at the foot of Mount Consolino, Stilo is a charming village that harmoniously blends with the tuff rock from which it emerges. Its naturally colored houses, clustered together, overlook narrow streets that invite exploration of every corner of this enchanting village. Stilo, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, is a place that preserves invaluable historical and cultural treasures.
Stilo's most precious jewel is undoubtedly the Cattolica, a mysterious Byzantine church located just outside the town. This ancient structure, with its unique architecture, is one of the village's most important symbols. But Stilo does not end here: strolling through its streets, one can admire numerous other masterpieces. The Duomo, or "mother church," dating back to the 1400s, with its austere grandeur, and the Church of San Francesco, which houses a monumental wooden altar, are just a few examples.
The Abbey of San Giovanni Theresti and the testimonies of Stilo's warlike past further enrich the village's historical panorama. Among these, the ancient Porta Stefanina stands out, the only remaining one of the five entrance gates of the city walls. Climbing Mount Consolino, you can reach the majestic Norman Castle, a defensive stronghold that offers breathtaking views and tells stories of ancient battles against threats from the sea.
What makes Stilo truly special is its intimate and cozy character, permeated by a profound spirituality nourished by both Roman Catholic and Byzantine rites. Stilo's millennial history, rooted in legend, intertwines with the religious dimension and the cultures of the peoples who have settled there over the centuries. This perfect blend of religion, history, and culture is the secret to Stilo's wonder.
Visiting Stilo means immersing yourself in a place where every stone tells a story, every corner hides a treasure, and every step takes the visitor on a journey through the centuries. It is an experience that leaves an indelible mark on the heart and mind of anyone fortunate enough to discover it.
