AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :

Sozopol is one of the most well-known towns on Bulgaria's Black Sea Coast.  Seen in this drone video by nikolov_kn, it's located about a half-hour drive south of Burgas, the main city on the southern part of the coastline.  It's also one of Bulgaria's oldest towns, having been founded by Greek colonists around 700 BC.  Part of the historical region of Thrace, now spread between modern-day Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey, it was once home to a gigantic statue of the Greek God Apollo which was captured in the Roman sack of the city in 72 BC.

Sozopol is a city in southeastern Bulgaria on the Black Sea. It is located on several small peninsulas in the southern part of the Burgas Bay. With a population of about 7,000 people, the city is the eighth largest settlement in the Burgas Region and is the administrative center of the Sozopol Municipality. Together with Nessebar, it is one of the oldest Bulgarian cities. With its cultural and historical past, with its preserved architecture from the 18th - 19th centuries, its beaches and the annual "Apolonia" art festivals, Sozopol attracts many tourists today.

Sozopol is located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, in the southern part of the Burgas Bay, 35 km south of Burgas. The city is divided into Old and New Town, between which is the Sea Garden. The old town is located on the small peninsula Skamnii, inserted between the Gulf of Sozopol and the Gulf of Koreniata. Skamnii is connected by an artificial embankment and a breakwater to the island of Saint Kirik with an area of 80 decares, located 250 meters northwest of Sozopol. The northern part of the peninsula ends with cape Skamni, and the southern part with cape Harmanite. The newest part of the city - the Harmanite district - is located along the Koreniata Bay to the Kolokita peninsula. The Kolokita Peninsula and Kavatsi Bay mark the southern border of the city.

In the Sozopol Bay are the island of Saint Ivan and the small island of Saint Peter located next to it.

The area is characterized by a complex of sea terraces, a highly indented coast and numerous inlets, with the alternation of a sandy beach with medium-sized and small beaches. The coastline is remarkably indented and the larger beaches within the city limits are the Central or Northern Beach and the Harmanites. Almost a third of Harmanite beach is occupied by sand dunes. The peninsulas between the bays have hard-to-reach headlands and many underwater and above-water rocks.

The area west of the city is characterized by relief with eastern and northeastern slopes dissected by deep mountains. South-west of the city is Mount Bakrlak with a height of 376 m, which is the highest part of the Copper Ridge.
