Weesenstein Castle is a historic castle in the Müglitz Valley, south of Dresden, and is one of the most interesting castle complexes in Saxony, primarily due to its unusual architecture and long history. The castle was first documented on December 17, 1318, in connection with the oath of aid and service sworn by Burgrave Otto von Dohna to the Margrave of Meissen. The name Weesenstein is likely derived from the quartzite rock found within the castle. The name Weesenstein appears almost continuously from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It is probable that around 1275, the castle and the surrounding land, along with Rabenau, were brought into the possession of the Dohna family as part of the dowry of the daughter of Burgrave Meinher III of Meissen when she married Burgrave Otto the Elder of Dohna, thus becoming part of the family's holdings.
