The castles were built between the 8th and 11th centuries.Mühlburg Castle is the oldest of the Drei Gleichen and also the oldest castle in Thuringia.Gleichen Castle, dating back to the 11th century, served as the eponymous ancestral seat of the Counts of Gleichen. A Romanesque residential building, the manor house, and the keep have been preserved.Wachsenburg Castle experienced times of war during its history and was rebuilt several times, including by Duke Ernst the Pious for use as a prison and orphanage. The castle has been welcoming guests since 1861. Today, it is a hotel with a restaurant and a museum.
