Perhaps more than any other major city, Los Angeles owes its existence to the power of human will.  It's miraculous enough that a giant metropolis can exist in a region with almost no freshwater resources, and then there is this: Greater Los Angeles, with no natural harbor, was able to become home to the USA's two busiest seaports: the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  In this drone video by  contributor mavictraveler, you'll get a bird's eye view of the Port of Los Angeles, also known as America's Port.

Contributor Dave Yip created this amazing aerial video of downtown Los Angeles at sunset.  As LA grew into the ranks of the USA's largest cities, it was often derided for not having a skyline worthy of a large city.  For example, it didn't have a single large building over 150 meters (around 500 ft.) until 1968, by which point New York and Chicago had dozens.  That's changed thanks to a series of skyscraper building booms which began in the late 1960's, the latest of which is still very much in progress.

Fox Plaza, Century City

mavictrave...

The Fox Plaza building is situated in Century City, a sort of "satellite downtown" for LA's West Side, near the interchange between the Santa Monica and San Diego Freeways.  Built on an old 20th Century Fox backlot, Century City is generally regarded as the capital of the worldwide entertainment industry.  Fitting, then, that Fox Plaza was the scene of the finale of Die Hard, the 1988 action blockbuster.  Contributor Mavictraveler created this drone video of the building, which was completed in 1987.

The imprecisely predefined "West LA" consists of a series of beach communities, most of which are independent cities.  The largest and most well known of these is Santa Monica, which lies more or less due west from downtown LA.  A city of nearly 90,000 residents as of 2018, its main pier is a popular attraction for tourists and locals.  In this drone video by Lucaspinhel, you'll get a bird's eye look at the famous pier, where actor Tom Hanks ended up when he  "ran clear to the ocean" in the movie Forrest Gump (1994)

One of the improbable aspects of the rise of Los Angeles is the fact that a giant city sprang up in what is essentially a desert.  Los Angeles tackled this seemingly unsolveable problem by importing freshwater from Northern California, diverting runoff from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to allow a metropolis of over 15 million to emerge in an otherwise inhospitable environment.  In this drone video by Nick Nack Films, you'll get an aerial view of one of the aquaducts used to bring precious water into LA.

Rainbow Harbor - Long Beach, CA

Marty Mitc...

Long Beach, California has a long and symbiotic relationship with its northern neighbor LA.  For decades, its Pike amusement zone was the biggest in the state, and the oil discovery on Signal Hill in the 1920's helped to drive the growth of the LA auto culture.  After years of decay due to the massive downsizing of the aerospace and defense companies which were once huge employers here, the Long Beach waterfront has undergone a renaissance.  Check it out from above in this aerial by Marty Mitchell.

With a population of over 200,000, Huntington Beach, California is the largest of the Orange County beach towns south of Los Angeles.  The town was named after Henry Huntington, a powerful Southern California railway man who helped to conceive of Orange County as a means to extend his great LA rail empire.   Huntington Beach is easily distinguished by its pier, whose bright orange roof contrasts brilliantly with the ocean waters.    See it from a bird's eye in this drone video by dronestarvisions.

Top AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) drone pilot zhoucreative brings us this fantastic FPV video using footage he shot for the 27th Critics' Choice Awards, which was held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles in March of 2022.  The famously crescent-shaped hotel is one of the landmarks of Century City, a sort of "satellite" downtown (and one-time 20th Century Fox backlot) on LA's West Side which is considered the epicenter of the city's entertainment industry.  This video made the FPV Pilots to Watch list.

Caldroneflyer created this aerial mini-tour of some of the golf holes of the Los Angeles Country Club in Beverly Hills, California.  The current location dates to 1911.  In 2019, the Los Angeles Country Club North Course was ranked at the #19 spot in the widely-followed Golf Digest ranking of the top 100 courses in the USA.  It's hosted numerous major tournaments, most recently the Walker Cup in 2017.  And another big tournament is coming here soon: the LACC is scheduled to host the US Open Golf Championship in 2023.

Point Dume: Malibu, California

mavictrave...

Contributor and pilot mavictraveler used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone to create this video of Point Dume in Malibu, California.  Located on the north side of Santa Monica Bay west of Los Angeles, Point Dume is the site of one of the most iconic scenes in the history of cinema: the finale of the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes.   It was here that astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) stumbles upon a destroyed Statue of Liberty and realizes that he has landed on a post-nuclear armageddon Planet Earth.

Cranes, lights and sunsets - Port of Long Beach

Allan Craw...

Here's an excellent sunset view of the Port of Long Beach near Los Angeles, compliments of Allan Crawford. The port currently handles about 7 million 20 foot equivalent containers (TEU's) per year.  That puts it in the #2 spot amongst US ports, second only to its neighbor - the Port of Los Angeles.  The port, which sits on a site of about 13 square km (around 5 square mi.), has about 80 berths. It lies near the mouth of the Los Angeles River on an artificial bay created by the San Pedro Breakwater.

Stanley Mosk Courthouse - Downtown LA

The Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was the venue for the Trial of the (20th) Century - twice.  In 1971, following what was billed as the longest and highest profile criminal trial in history, a cult leader named Charles Manson and his followers were convicted for the brutal killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others in the so-called Helter-Skelter Murders.  That proved to be a mere warmup for another West Side multiple homicide trial - that of OJ Simpson, who was acquitted here in 1995.

Contributor reggiesurfsax created this marvelous aerial view of a sight in Long Beach, California, a 30 minute drive south of downtown LA at the rare times when traffic is light.  It's the RMS Queen Mary, once one of the world's greatest cruise ships.  Launched in 1934, she was the flag ship of the famed Cunard line, and was considered the most glamorous way to cross the Atlantic Ocean before the jet age.  The 310 meter (just over 1k ft.) ship has been moored in Long Beach Harbor since the 1960's.

Empty Los Angeles - Coronavirus

Brennan Ma...

Check out this rather haunting drone video from Los Angeles during the Covid-19 pandemic, compliments of brand-new AirVuz contributor Brennan Maxwell.  The video was shot during the first few weeks of the quarantine, when strict social distancing measures imposed at the state, county and city level left most of LA's roads, highways, and other public spaces virtually empty.  The video features footage of the Staples Center, the Los Angeles Zoo, Dodger Stadium, Chinatown, the famous Hollywood sign, the Santa Monica Pier, and much more.

Air + Style is a snowboarding contest which has freed itself from the constraints of having to take place in the mountains.  While it began life in the 1990's in the Austrian Alps, the contest now sets up snowboard courses wherever space permits.  With extensive use of music, the events have mesmerized many millions of younger extreme sports enthusiasts around the world.  In 2017, AirVuz was selected as a media partner for an Air + Style event in Los Angeles; this video is a recap of the event.
