The castle of Brucoli, located in the town of Brucoli, was built by King John II of Aragon and given to Queen Joanna of Aragon in XV century. The reason why such a fortified work was built was mainly to protect the small fishermen village against an exponential growth of Turkish expansion along the Mediterranean coasts. The fortress was built at the mouth of the port-canal not only for defensive purposes, but also to monitor maritime trade.
