As the drone industry has grown, so has the presence of women within it. InterDrone hosted a Women in Drones Luncheon this afternoon where we were able to meet and mingle with some of the most influential women in the business.
Around 120 women attended the luncheon, nearly tripling the showing from 2015. A panel of five women influencing the commercial drone industry answered questions from the audience and moderator Gretchen West.
“It’s amazing, it was just a year ago that this initiative took off and really every drone show has had something like this. Every show there are more and more people participating.”
“We announced today that we launched the women of commercial drones initiative. We’re going to be setting up mentorship programs, scholarship programs, we wanna just bring people together for networking.”
“Who would have thought that this would be a thing, I’ve been in this industry for 12 years and it’s amazing.”
One of the many topics discussed was how to get more women involved in the drone industry. JC, from Kids Drone Zone, said it starts with mothers and their daughters
“I’ve just been blown away by, women have actually been programed that ‘girls do this and boys do that.’ To alleviate that I say, ‘No she wants to do it, don’t you honey?’ And as I’m saying that I’m taking her by the hand and giving her the controllers and she’ll say ‘Mommy this is cool,” so I say ‘Mommy, she wants a drone and let’s see how we can do that.’”
And to those who think women can’t fly drones Ye Song had this to say: “I want to say, we just built a drone at my company and I’m the cofounder and President. So women can’t just fly a drone, actually they can build a drone.”
