Aerial Views of the Protests in Hong Kong

Since June of 2019, protests have been frequent in Hong Kong. Drone pilot Droneland has captured the events from above. 

 

The protests erupted due to a proposed bill allowing extradition of criminal suspects to mainland china. Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997, but since returning to Chinese rule, it has more autonomy than the mainland. The people of Hong Kong have more rights than those of Chinese mainland. The arrangement is known as “one country, two systems”.

 

Those who oppose the extradition bill claim that allowing this to pass will risk exposing residents to unfair trials and violent treatment. Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets over the past months protesting the bill.

 

The bill has now been withdrawn but many are still protesting in an effort to obtain the following, which has been deemed “five demands, not one less!” -

 

1. For the protests not to be characterized as a “riot”

2. Amnesty for arrested protesters 

3. An independent inquiry into alleged police brutality 

4. Implementation of complete universal suffrage

5. The bill be withdrawn (which has already happened) 

 

Chinese president Xi Jinping is against the separatism, saying any attempt to divide china would end in “bodies smashed and bones ground to powder”. The current laws, the judiciary system, and the division of Hong Kong and China are set to expire in 2047.
