Calabria appears on a map as the "toe" of the "boot" of the Italian Peninsula. It has long coastlines along the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north and the Ionian Sea to the south, both of which are considered large inlets of the Mediterranean Sea. About 90% of its interior area is covered by hills or mountains, including the lower (southernmost) reaches of the Apennine Mountains chain.
