The resort city lies on the eastern (Caribbean Sea) side of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. Cancún was virtually unknown until the 1970's, when the Mexican government launched an investment program to create a new planned resort city. The program was wildly successful, and within a couple of decades the city was the country's top beach destination.
