Castle Grandson at Golden Hour [4K/60fps]
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
Contributor and drone pilot AboveTheClouds created this beautiful aerial video of an important Swiss Castle. The 12th century landmark Grandson Castle is situated in a town of the same name in Vaud, the westernmost of Switzerland's 26 cantons. It sits on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, the largest lake located entirely within Swiss borders. The castle was rebuilt in the 13th century by nobleman Otto de Grandson, who accompanied Prince (soon-to-be King) Edward of England on one of the Crusades.

Castle Grandson is the second largest in Switzerland. Its construction spanned several decades. The first building, a square dungeon, is thought to date back to the beginning of the eleventh century. Three fortified towers were built in the fourteenth century during the reign of Othon I of Grandson, friend of the English court and grand knight, who participated in the eighth crusade. In 1378, a fire broke out in the town and destroyed a large part of the castle. Until the end of the fourteenth century, the region belonged to the Counts of Grandson, a dynasty affiliated with the House of Savoy which died while the last Lord of Grandson Othon III, knight and brilliant poet, was killed in a judicial duel in 1397 by Gerard d'Estavayer, who accused him of poisoning the Count of Savoy Amédée VII. Having no descendants, the Savoyards then find themselves at the head of Grandson and this until 1420 when they give way to the Counts of Chalon-Arlay. During the fifteenth century, three other towers were added, two at the bottom of the castle near the lake, and one further in the village (the tower of Gex). These three towers, built around 1450, protected the city and the castle from attacks that could occur by Lake Neuchâtel. In February 1476, the Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold tries to regain control of the fortress that had fallen into the hands of the Bernese the previous year. He established a siege against the castle, and when the 400 besieged surrendered on February 28th, he had them all hanged or drowned except for two who executed punishments and saved their lives for their services. The reaction of the Swiss is not slow and on March 2, they launch the attack against the Burgundians. These are disorganized despite their superiority in terms of artillery and cavalry. The troops of Charles the Bold are defeated at Concise during the Battle of Grandson. He must then order a withdrawal that leaves the Swiss an important booty and the castle. Currently Grandson Castle, classified as a cultural property of national importance is one of the best preserved fortresses in Switzerland. Only the dungeon disappeared, probably destroyed during the construction of the western part of the castle. There are traces of this tower on the north wall facing the Jura, and also a small tower stuck to the west wall facing the town was destroyed.
