Settled since Paleothic times, Chaves came to occupy a position of regional prominence during Roman times due to its location relative to three important roads. It subsequently played a significant role in the bloody struggles between Christianity and Islam and later between the nation-states of Spain and Portugal.

The municipality is bordered to the north by Galicia (Spain), to the east by the municipality of Vinhais, to the southeast by Valpaços, to the southwest by Vila Pouca de Aguiar and to the west by Boticas and Montalegre.
