Located about an hour's drive northeast of Orlando, Daytona's beach is known for its hard-packed sand, which can accommodate motor vehicles. The Daytona Beach and Road Course, which ran along the beach here from the 1920's through the 1950's, played an important role in the formation of the NASCAR racing circuit. In 1959, professional racing moved to the Daytona International Speedway, which became home of the Daytona 500 race.
