Bruges, Belgium is one of the historical and cultural treasures of Western Europe.  Capital of the West Flanders region, it's connected to the North Sea by a canal system.  Founded in the early 12th century, during the High Middle Ages it came to represent an important junction between the Hanseatic League of North European cities and Southern Europe.  While its fortunes declined after 1500, they revived in the second half of the 19th century as the well-preserved town became one of Europe's first true tourist destinations.
