Checkout this highly cinematic drone video of some Dutch windmills, compliments of contributor chrisdeyong.  While the windmill was not invented in the Netherlands, it found an ideal home there beginning in the 15th century.  With much of its territory below sea level, the Netherlands was prone to chronic flooding.  The windmill was originally adopted here as a means to control the environment by pumping water out of the low-lying areas which were then protected by dykes.  The windmills later helped the region industrialize.
