Francavilla Fontana is called the City of the Imperials in honor of the Imperial Princes who ruled it making it one of the most important cultural and industrial centers in the area. The Puglia Region awarded the title of City of Art in 2009. The Imperiali Castle takes its name from the last feudal lords, it was built by Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo in 1450 and then enlarged in 1563 by Bernardino Bonifacio and transformed into a residence by the Imperials. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has a rectangular plan, on the right side there is a baroque porch which breaks the austerity of the facade; you enter through an eighteenth-century portal and you reach the internal courtyard, here there is a baptismal font of the fourteenth century and a double ramp staircase that leads to the sale that once served as a family picture gallery. With a short walk you will find the Matrix Church of 1743, built on the previous Angevin church from which the source in the castle courtyard comes. The facade of the Mother Church shows all its grandeur, is in Baroque style and has two large statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The interior is a Greek cross enhanced by the numerous canvases present. The bust - silver reliquary of S. Renato is very interesting; from the choir you can access the entire antisacristy where a canvas of 1759 depicting the Madonna of the Rosary is preserved, and the sacristy with inlaid eighteenth-century stalls.
