Referenced in the famous 11th century Domesday Book, Gillingham lies on the estuary of the River Medway, a relatively short distance southeast of London. Much of the famous Chatham Dockyard actually lies within Chatham; the shipyard, built in the time of Queen Elizabeth I and the "birthplace" of much of the Royal Navy for centuries, was the target of the infamous Raid on the Medway by the Dutch navy in 1667.
